New Season, New Do

Ellen Tailor Gene Juarez Black Hair Before This is me. 100% Greek with a stereotypical Mediterranean look. Brown eyes, olive skin, and black hair. Yes, I’m unique. Sure, some call me exotic. But I needed a change so allow me to rephrase: This was me.

I’m slowly but surely creeping up on the big 3-0. While most women dread getting older, I’m embracing the milestone. My 20’s were filled with doubt and insecurity and I’ll be damned if I let that carry over into my 30’s. My biggest insecurity is my body so I’m back in the gym and eating right.

It’s overwhelming to stand on the scale and think I’ve got to lose a significant amount of weight. To keep myself motivated, I’ve set up mini goals throughout the summer along with a rewards system. Hair is my first reward!

Susie Gene Juarez UVillageI was always told I could never be anything other than a brunette. If I could, I’d be platinum blonde but to say that’d look ridiculous would be an understatement. To save money I tried to go the boxed dye route. Big mistake. It was time to go to the professionals. Susie at Gene Juarez‘s UVillage location was the woman that could save me.

Susie Powers is an amazing colorist who use to run the color department and was a member of Gene Juarez‘s education team. Just recently her position evolved and she’s now behind the chair. Her forte is correcting color, redheads, and ombre / highlights.

I sat in her chair and as we chatted about my hair wants she pointed out the lotion, cuticle oil, and polish that I was more than welcome to use. What a nice touch! I really felt as if Susie had invited me into her home and wanted to make sure I was comfortable.

Ellen Tailor Gene Juarez Black Ombre Hair Before AfterAs I explained to Susie my want to be a blonde she said the magic word, “Kardashian.” My face lit up! Khloe Kardashian is my hair idol. The ombre look she rocks is totally gorgeous but I never thought I could have it. Susie was confident that she could help make my hair dreams a reality.

We began the process and it was beyond exciting! Susie explained that we would need to lighten my hair in steps. If we went too light too fast, my hair would break and that was obviously not an option. I appreciated that Susie’s first priority was the health of my hair. She used a variety of treatments to lock in the moisture and shine. It was also suggested I get a little trim, cue Stella.

Stella is also an educator and she took the time to squeeze me in. She cleaned up the ends and helped frame my face. Stella’s own hair had that perfect carelessly curled look to it. After complimenting her, she took the time to show me how to get that beach wave look for myself!

Ellen Tailor Gene Juarez Ombre Hair AfterWhen I looked in the mirror I couldn’t believe that the girl looking back was me. I walked out of Gene Juarez feeling like a brand new person because I sure as hell looked like one! The next morning, reality sunk in. Holy crap. I don’t even look like me anymore! I’ll be honest, I had a mini meltdown. I contemplated calling Susie and going back to black. I didn’t think I could pull off such a dramatic change!

Once I washed my hair and used the tips Stella taught me, I styled my new hair my way and I absolutely loved it! Yes, it’s different. Yes, it’s a change. And yes, I think it looks really REALLY good.

I’ve finally found my hair dream team at Gene Juarez. Most importantly, a team I can trust. I’ve already set up another appointment with Susie in a month where we’ll take my hair lighter for summer. If you’re thinking of making a change, just want to treat yourself, or made an incredibly bad at home uh-oh, call Susie!

Ellen, love the new look. I want to tell you: don’t dread the scales. I will be 58 tomorrow and thought I’d never be normal weight. Boy was I wrong! I joined weight watchers in Sept 2013 and dropped 50# in 4 months! I don’t deprive myself, in fact I am sipping a glass of wine right now! I just count points and walk everyday. To firm up I have started going to hot yoga. I feel awesome!

I think you look lovely just as you are. But if you want to change it up I support you as well. Good luck and I think that my 30’s have been awesome. And I wish you nothing but the same!
